Franz Davidis

Franz Davidis , also Franz David or Franz David Hertel , Hungarian Dávid Ferenc (* 1510 in Cluj , † November 15, 1579 at the Déva Fortress in Transylvania ), was a Unitarian theologian and an important representative of the Reformation in Transylvania .

Life, work and aftermath

After studying at the University of Wittenberg , Davidis became a Lutheran pastor in Cluj-Napoca. He later converted to Calvinism and finally to Unitarianism in 1566. After initially working with Giorgio Biandrata , he clashed with him. Attempts at mediation by Fausto Sozzini failed. At the instigation of Biandrata, Davidis was sentenced as a heretic to life imprisonment and died in prison.

The evangelical Heidelberg theologian Adam Neuser joined the group around Davidis after fleeing from Heidelberg , where he was persecuted for his Unitarian views, into the Ottoman- ruled Transylvania. He later went to Constantinople , where he supposedly converted to Islam .

From Davidis' followers, the Davidists , emerged the Jewish -minded Unitarians (Judaizanten) who, as nonadorants, in contrast to the moderate Unitarians around Fausto Sozzini and Giorgio Biandrata, rejected any veneration of Christ . They saw in Jesus just a human being. From the Judaizanten in turn went Sabbatati out that the New Testament rejected and believed that the coming of the Messiah had not yet taken place.
