Franz Christoph Erler (born October 5, 1829 in Kitzbühel ; † January 6, 1911 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor . He was one of the busiest sculptors and restorers of the Ringstrasse era , trying to tie in with medieval building sculpture with his neo-Gothic work.

Life

After the early death of his father, Erler had to work in the family miller's business. At the age of 21, he received his training from the master carver Kaspar Biehler in Kufstein . From 1853 to 1860 he studied in the art class of the Academy in Vienna . He was sponsored by Joseph Führich and after completing his studies he was commissioned to create a series of figures and the Way of the Cross in the Altlerchenfeld church . In 1866 he wanted to return to Tyrol, but the architect Heinrich von Ferstel prevented this by getting him the commission for most of the figures in the Vienna Votive Church . In 1863 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus . At the old age of eighty he created the national defense monument in Kitzbühel. He is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 16E, Row 4, No. 6).

Honors

In 1961 the town of his birth placed a memorial to him in the Kitzbühel Kurpark and in the same year a plaque was placed on the house where he died, Argentinierstrasse 54 in the 4th district of Wieden
