The Roman Catholic parish church Bad Vöslau is a little higher in the Kirchenplatz in the town of Bad Vöslau in Lower Austria . The parish church of Jakobus the Elder , incorporated into Melk Abbey, belongs to the dean's office in Baden in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building .

The hall church with a dominant east tower facade in Romanesque round arch style at the transition to strict historicism was built from 1860 to 1870 according to plans by the architect Franz Sitte . The church, donated by Count Moritz II von Fries (1804–1887), is the architect's main work and is the most important sacred building of the time in southern Lower Austria.

history

The parish with the church in the castle initially belonged to Traiskirchen and since 1312 to Gainfarn . After 1845 the town was enlarged due to the summer vacation and the influx of factory workers, which resulted in the need for its own parish church. The west-facing church was built from 1860 to 1870. Elevated to a parish church in 1869, the church was incorporated into Melk Abbey.

architecture

The three-bay nave under a gable roof has massive buttresses stepped several times and narrow, high round-arched windows with beveled reveals on a strong, cranked cornice, which also accentuates the central stepping of the buttresses and surrounds most of the church building. The almost square choir with a round apse has flanking buttresses. The low extensions to the side of the choir contain the stately oratory in the north and the sacristy in the south . The mighty, representative east tower complex with a dominant middle section between high buttresses and narrow flanks is wider than the nave. All the pillars and buttresses of the east tower complex were crowned with squat turrets and brick pyramid helmets. The main portal, staggered like the tower facade, has a richly ornamented columnar portal with round arches and a bare tympanum with corner pillars with luminous angels. The sculptures of the portal zone Jakobus the Elder above the portal, Maria Immaculata on the first floor of the tower, were created by the sculptor Franz Erler . The south portal is richly ornamented with strong semicircular arches over square pillars and set columns.

The high altar was made according to a design by the architect Franz Sitte . The altar leaves in the three-part retable were painted by Joseph von Führich in 1869/70 . The main picture represents St. Maria Immaculata on the crescent moon with the hll. James d. Ä. and Joseph and the side pictures the hll. Mauritius and Flora.

organ

The organ was manufactured in 1870 by the Ullmann organ building workshop. In 1919, the tin pipes that were delivered as part of the metal donation in 1917 were added again . In 1939 the organ was equipped with an electric fan and from 1965 to 1969 Josef Mertin rebuilt and expanded the organ in stages. Starting in 2016, Orgelbau Pieringer installed a new organ with 930 pipes in the historic case and inaugurated it in November 2018.
