Life

After graduating from high school in 1974, Fahrner studied Catholic theology at the University of Vienna . He received in 1980 by Cardinal Franz König , the ordination . He then worked for two years as a chaplain at the St. Othmarkirche in Mödling . He then became cathedral vicar to St. Stephen (1982-89). He was also VAss at the Institute for Apologetics and Fundamental Theology at the University of Vienna . During this time he also obtained a doctorate in theology after completing his master's degree. From 1987, Fahrner was a military pastor at the Vienna Military Command and at the same time was appointed the first church rector of the military parish church of St. Johannes Nepomuk in Vienna. The renovation of the church building goes back to his initiative. In the meantime he was a military pastor at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt for a year .

Military Bishop Christian Werner appointed him as successor to Rudolf Schütz on September 1, 2004 as military vicar general (official title / function) of the Austrian military ordinariate. Three days later he was appointed military vicar general (rank) under Defense Minister Günther Platter . Fahrner was previously Episcopal Vicar for Militia and Pastoral Affairs. As a delegate of the Holy See he was active at the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) in Vienna. In September 2011, Pope Benedict XVI made military vicar general Franz Leander Fahrner a prelate. At the end of October 2012, Bishop Werner removed him from the position of military vicar general (function), which he justified with "loss of confidence". Fahrner continues to work in the Austrian Armed Forces as a researcher and chief teaching officer at the Institute for Military Ethical Studies (at the Protestant Military Superintendent) and legally holds the rank of military vicar general.
