Franz Graf Clam-Gallas (born July 26, 1854 in Reichenberg , † January 20, 1930 in Friedland ) was the landowner of the Reichenberg, Friedland, Grafenstein and Lämberg dominions in Northern Bohemia and the Clam-Gallas Palais in Prague and Vienna from 1891 to 1930 .

biography

After studying law and political science and agriculture and forestry in Vienna, Count Franz Clam-Gallas was a member of the manor house from 1895 to 1918 , and since 1901, as a large landowner, a member of the Bohemian parliament in Prague. In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, he lost almost all of the large estates in northern Bohemia and the family residence in Prague, the Clam-Gallas Palace, as a result of a land reform by the government of the Czechoslovak Republic . In 1918, before the Czech authorities took over the building, he succeeded in moving part of the valuable inventory from this palace to Lämberg Castle in Northern Bohemia, where it was preserved and remained in the family's possession until 1945.

Cultural and social activities

Franz Graf Clam-Gallas was a sponsor of historical research in Northern Bohemia and in 1893 a founding member of the Society for Modern History of Austria. He arranged for the archivist Josef Bergel (1874–1952) to develop and organize the extensive castle archives in Friedland in Northern Bohemia - he also wrote a treatise on Friedland Castle himself published in the weaver's library - and made the archives accessible to historians.
