Eduard Graf Clam-Gallas (born March 14, 1805 in Prague , † March 17, 1891 in Vienna ) was an Austrian officer, most recently a general of the cavalry .

biography

He was the son of Christian Christoph Graf Clam-Gallas (1771–1838), known for his artistry and charity . He joined the Austrian army in 1823, was first Rittmeister in Cuirassier Regiment No. 1 in 1831 , major in 1835 , colonel in 1840 , major general and brigade commander in Prague in 1846 .

In 1848 he came to Italy , where he led a brigade under Radetzky and distinguished himself at Santa Lucia , Vicenza and Custozza . He was awarded the Maria Theresa Order and promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal . In 1849 he became commander of the Transylvanian Army Corps and was successful against Józef Bem . In 1850 he was given command of the 1st Bohemian Army Corps , which he also commanded in the Sardinian War in Italy in the battles of Magenta and Solferino in 1859 . In these battles, his army corps was the first to leave the battlefield, but this had no personal consequences. Promotion to general of the cavalry . In 1861 he became a member of the manor house , the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council and in 1865 the emperor's chief steward.

In 1866 in the German War he suffered a devastating defeat in the Battle of Gitschin , was brought before a court martial , but acquitted due to his social position. He spent his twilight years on his Friedland and Reichenberg estates in Bohemia.

In 1850 he married Clothilde (1828-1899), the heir to Joseph Franz, Prince of Dietrichstein (1798-1858), his son was Count Franz Clam-Gallas .
