Franz Gross (politician)

Franz Gross (born June 27, 1815 in Hennersdorf , Austrian Silesia , † January 15, 1890 in Wels ) was an Austrian notary, politician and mayor of Wels.

Franz Gross, the son of a poor farming family, studied in Troppau , Olmütz and at the University of Vienna . In 1842 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. In 1844 he worked as an administrator in Schrems , in 1846 as a nurse and district commissioner in Schleissheim . In 1850 he became a public prosecutor in Wels, then in 1851 a notary. From 1861 to 1879 and from 1883 to 1887 he was mayor of Wels. From 1861 to 1879 he was a member of the Austrian Reichsrat .

The liberal politician Gross promoted the establishment and expansion of the Wels industrial companies, the Wels folk festival and the Wels local railway company , of which he was the concessionaire. He was made an honorary citizen of the city, and a street in Wels was named after him.
