Franz Hansl

Franz Hansl (born October 23, 1897 in Troppau , Austria-Hungary , † August 13, 1942 in Arezzo , Italy ) was an Austrian football player and coach . The striker was Austrian champion in 1924 with the Wiener Amateur-SV and cup winner in 1921 . He later worked as a coach in Italy and coached the Austrian team at the 1934 World Cup .

Career

Striker star among the amateurs

Franz Hansl began his career with DSV Troppau , which, however, was unable to play competitive games during the First World War due to the suspension of the Moravian-Silesian Championship of the ÖFV. Shortly before the end of the war, the striker joined the Vienna Amateur SV . He soon became the club's top scorer and, together with Kálmán Konrád, formed one of the most effective attacking duos in the league. With an average of almost one goal per game, the striker scored 20 goals in the 1920/21 league and even 22 goals in the following year . Konrád scored 17 and 21 times in the opposing goal. In a 6-0 win against Vienna , Hansl scored four goals in one game, the other two were scored by his strike partner.

In 1921, however, as the best result for the time being, it should only be enough for the runner-up championship with equal points behind Rapid . But in the same year with a 2-1 win against the Wiener Sport-Club with the ÖFB-Cup, the first title in the club's history was won. Franz Hansl contributed the first goal in the final. In the national team, the striker made his debut against Hungary on April 6, 1919 . On January 15, 1922, he scored two goals in a team in a 3: 3 against Italy in Milan.

In 1920, Ferdl Swatosch completed the inner storm with a powerful force. In a famous game in front of over 50,000 spectators on the Hohe Warte against Rapid (7: 3) the three together scored all seven goals, with Franz Hansl scoring three times. In the end, the amateurs were able to secure their first championship title in 1923/24 , whereby the top-class new commitments in the inner storm area by Guggi Wieser and Alfréd Schaffer pushed Franz Hansl into the role of supplementary player and only made six league games in the championship year.

Moved to Italy and the 1934 World Cup

Ultimately, the striker decided to move to the newly promoted WAC , where he promptly scored a goal in his first game in a sensational 2-0 win against the amateurs. After successful relegation, Franz Hansl moved to Italy in 1926 to the small FC Forlì, where he initially worked as a player-coach and then as a coach. Francesco Hansel received his first major engagement from Serie A in 1932 with AC Torino and in the following years with US Alessandria Calcio , AS Livorno and US Salernitana .

During his time as a coach in Serie A, Franz Hansl also agreed to coach the Austrian national team at the 1934 World Cup in Italy. During the amateurish preparation at the time, the ÖFB refrained from bringing its own supervisors and only put up a 16-man squad . The team reached the semi-finals via France and Hungary, where it came to an inglorious elimination against the hosts.
