Franz Hoenen

Franz Hoenen SVD (born November 1, 1919 in Rocherath near Liège ; † December 21, 1997 in Sankt Augustin ) was the first Roman Catholic bishop of the Kenge diocese in the Congo . After his resignation (voluntary resignation ) he lived in the Archdiocese of Cologne and often represented the local auxiliary bishops at confirmations.

Life

Franz Hoenen entered the mission house St. Josef der Steyler Missionare in Geilenkirchen in 1933 and made his first religious vows in Sankt Augustin in 1941 . Following his ordination on August 8, 1948 in Teteringen (Netherlands), he was a missionary in India from 1949 to 1951.

In 1951 Hoenen went to Zaire, what was then the Belgian Congo . On July 6, 1963 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Kenge / Zaire and received on October 20, 1963 from Pope Paul VI. Episcopal ordination in Rome. Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop Pietro Sigismondi and Archbishop Sergio Pignedoli , the Apostolic Envoy for West and Central Africa. He resigned from the episcopate on April 25, 1974 and handed over the leadership of the diocese to a local bishop.

From 1974 to 1977 he worked for his order in Rome, before he returned to Sankt Augustin in 1978 and worked there at the Institute of Missiology and the Order's College.
