Franz Josef Felten

Franz Josef Felten (born July 10, 1946 in Weiten ) is a German historian .

Franz Josef Felten passed his Abitur in 1966 at the State New Language High School in Saarburg. He studied in Saarbrücken and Paris. He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . He passed the first state examination for teaching at grammar schools in French and history in 1971. From 1972 to 1977 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Saarbrücken . There he received his doctorate in 1977 with the thesis Abbots and lay abbots in the Franconian Empire. Study of the relationship between church and state in the early Middle Ages . From 1972 to 1976 he was a research assistant with Friedrich Prinz at Saarland University . From 1977 to 1979 he worked as a trainee lawyer and in school service in Saarbrücken. After the second state examination in 1979 he was assistant to Kaspar Elm and university assistant at the Free University of Berlin . In 1990 Felten completed his habilitation with a thesis in Avignon and Paris. Investigations into the political scope of action of the early Avignon popes in Berlin.

In 1990/91 he was a substitute professor for medieval history in Essen. He was a professor of medieval history in Dresden (1993) and in Halle-Wittenberg (1993–1997). From 1997 until his retirement he taught as the successor to Stefan Weinfurter as professor at the University of Mainz . Since 2003 he has headed the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz . Felten was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 2004/05 . In 2005 he was visiting professor at the École pratique des hautes études . Felten is co-editor of the historical yearbook and the historical regional studies series .

Felten is a member of the Constance Working Group for Medieval History (since 1999), the Society for Rhenish History , the Hessian Historical Commission Darmstadt , the Historical Commission for Nassau and numerous other scientific societies. His research interests include questions from the border area between political, church and social history, women in the religious movement and in the orders of the Middle Ages, social history, gender history and the papacy in Avignon .
