Franz Joseph Engel

Franz Joseph Engel (born May 4, 1867 in Heigenbrücken im Spessart , † April 18, 1922 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher . He made a particular contribution to the Roman remains of Passau .

Engel studied Classical Philology at the University of Munich . On January 18, 1898 he received his doctorate there . From 1894 to 1918 Engel was a grammar school teacher or grammar school professor at the humanistic grammar school in Passau. In 1918 he became vice principal at the grammar school in Freising , in 1920 he worked again in Passau and in 1921 Engel became grammar school director in Aschaffenburg .

From 1904 to 1911 he carried out excavations in Passau- Innstadt and discovered the remains of the Boiodurum Roman fort .
