Franz Karl Josef Count von Kaunitz – Rietberg (born December 9, 1676 , † December 27, 1717 in Rome ) was bishop in Laibach and canon in several dioceses.

Origin and family

Franz Karl Josef Graf von Kaunitz-Rietberg came from the old Bohemian noble family Kaunitz , from which numerous well-known personalities emerged. He was the son of Dominik Andreas I von Kaunitz (1655–1705) and his wife Maria Eleonore von Sternberg . His brother Maximilian Ulrich had married the heiress Maria Ernestina Francisca Countess von Rietberg , whereby the family came into the possession of the County of Rietberg and rose to the high nobility . Franz Karl's nephew Karl Joseph (1715–1737) was canon in several dioceses. His nephew Wenzel Anton was State Chancellor of Austria.

Act

Little is known about his spiritual career. He had a PhD and was Dr. Jur. Utr. in secular civil law and in canon law . In 1711 Franz Karl was appointed Bishop of Laibach . He was also canon in Passau , Olomouc and Salzburg and auditor of the Roman Rota . He also held the office of rector of the German Catholic National Church in Rome.
