Franz Knipping (historian)

Franz Knipping (born March 9, 1944 in Höxter ) is a German historian .

Live and act

Franz Knipping spent his school days in Dortmund and then studied history and Romance studies as well as politics and law in Münster and Tübingen from 1963 to 1968 . In 1973 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with a study of American policy towards Russia during the time of the Hitler-Stalin Pact . In 1984 he completed his habilitation there with a thesis on Franco-German relations during the world economic crisis. From 1970 to 1974 Knipping was co-editor of the Federal Foreign Office's file edition “Files on German Foreign Policy 1918–1945” in Bonn. After a 18-month research stay in Paris , followed by two years as Speaker of the Volkswagen Foundation in Hannover , he became 1978 Assistant Professor 1984 Professor at the Institute of Contemporary History at the University of Tuebingen. From 1994 to 2010 he held the chair for modern and contemporary history at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and then took over the coordination of the university’s master’s degree in European Studies as a senior professor. In 1990 and 1996 he was awarded Jean Monnet Professorships by the European Commission (in Tübingen and Wuppertal). In 2007 he received the French Order of Palmes Académiques (Chevalier).

Knipping teaches and researches the history of international relations and European integration, with topics from German, French, European and American history as well as the history of Southeast Asia. He has presented numerous books and scientific articles on this. His teachers were Josef Engel , Gerhard Schulz , Andreas Hillgruber and Jean-Baptiste Duroselle . Together with Heinz Duchhardt , he is the editor of the Handbook of the History of International Relations , the ninth volume of which he wrote on The World in the Cold War .

Knipping has guest lectureships and teaching positions at the universities of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), Strasbourg, Florence (European University Institute), Bangkok (Chulalongkorn), Kaliningrad (Technical University), Berlin (Humboldt), Augsburg, Hanover, Rostock and at the Institut d ' Etudes Politiques perceived in Paris. He is the initiator, organizer, coordinator of numerous projects and scientific conferences. In particular, he headed the successful European Studies Program of the European Commission in Bangkok from 1992 to 1999 .
