Franz Koch (Manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Koch (born February 16, 1979 in Lübeck ) is a German manager. From July 2011 to March 2013, he was CEO of the sporting goods manufacturer Puma .

Life

Koch grew up with five siblings in Lübeck. His parents, Michael and Gode-Linde Koch, geb. Henschel, ran the Heick & Schmaltz textile goods store there from 1970 to 2012 . From 1999 he completed a basic course in business administration in Hamburg. In 2001 he obtained a Master of Commerce from the University of Sydney . In 2004 he graduated from the Leipzig Graduate School of Management with a degree in business administration .

From 2004 to 2007 Koch worked for the consulting firm Oliver Wyman . At the beginning of 2007 he switched to the three-person strategy department at Puma as a consultant, which advises the management board there. Shortly afterwards, Puma was taken over by Kering (then still under the name PPR). In 2008, Koch was appointed Head of Global Strategy at Puma . In March 2011, he succeeded Jochen Zeitz , who had specifically built up Koch for this position, to head the Herzogenaurach-based company. In addition, Koch became board member for strategy and corporate development of the company. Zeitz took over the position of Chairman of the Puma Board of Directors until November 2012.

Koch's strategic goal was initially to carefully modernize Puma, to reduce the lifestyle division and to put more emphasis on competitive sports. However, a slump in profits in 2012 forced him to undertake fundamental restructuring, which resulted in numerous layoffs. In retrospect, many observers attributed the economic difficulties to the failure of reforms by his predecessor. Following a decision by the Puma Board of Directors in December 2012, Koch resigned from his position in March 2013. At the same time, he left the management of the French parent company PPR . In April 2013, the Norwegian Björn Gulden , a former professional soccer player , was appointed Koch's successor.

In March 2014, Manager Magazin erroneously reported that Koch in the Haniel Group would be included in the "small circle" in which the shareholder representatives on the Haniel Supervisory Board meet. As a family member, Koch is one of the 650 or so Haniel shareholders . His mother Gode-Linde Koch is a descendant of Franz Haniel . In fact, after several years of hiatus after his work at Puma, in May 2015 Koch became co-managing director and partner at the Berlin eyewear manufacturer Mykita .

In October 2018, Koch switched to the management of the Berlin startup Onefootball.

Private

Koch actively played hockey during his school days in Lübeck and while studying in Leipzig . With his team Harvestehuder THC he  was German champion in hockey (field) in 2000  .

Franz Koch is married and has one son.
