Franz Leonhard (born September 1, 1870 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † July 20, 1950 in Marburg ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Leonhard was the son of a highly respected lawyer and notary. After graduating from high school in Magdeburg, he studied law at the Albertus University of Königsberg and the Philipps University of Marburg . He became active in the Corps Hasso-Nassovia in 1889 and remained closely associated with the Corps throughout his life. He was a trainee lawyer in Kassel and an assessor in Berlin. In 1896 he became a private lecturer in Roman law and civil law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1898 he returned to Philipps University as an associate professor . She appointed him to the chair in 1899 and elected him rector for the academic year 1916/17 . In August 1914 he was seriously wounded as a reserve captain in an infantry company.

Until 1918 Leonhard was a member of the German Conservative Party . In the Weimar Republic he joined the German National People's Party . As a Jew , he laid down his corps bond in 1933. The law to restore the civil service did not apply to his case because he had been a full professor since 1899 and had taken part in the First World War . Therefore, after 36 years of service, he was retired in 1936 . Nonetheless, as emeritus , he was removed from the staff and course directory of Philipps University. "Rehabilitated" in 1945 , he taught in Marburg until 1947. In November 1946, at the age of 76, he became protector of the Hessen student community , which continued the tradition of his corps.

The legal scholar Rudolf Leonhard and the President of the Senate at the Supreme Court Friedrich Leonhard (1868–1937) were his brothers. Rudolf was a Heidelberg Rhenane , Friedrich was also a Hessen-Nassauer.
