Franz Marshal

Franz Marschall (born March 20, 1916 in Neuenegg , † September 13, 1983 in Lengnau near Biel ) was a Swiss agricultural scientist . His main areas of work were grassland sociology and seeds . Marschall decisively determined the legal basis for seed testing in Switzerland.

Live and act

Franz Marschall, son of a farmer, studied agriculture at the ETH Zurich from 1936 after several years of agricultural practice and passed the diploma examination as an engineer-agronomist there in 1940 . From 1941 to 1943 he worked as Albert Volkart's assistant at the Institute for Crop Production at ETH Zurich. At this university he received his doctorate in 1947 with a dissertation on golden oat meadows in Switzerland.

From 1943 to 1981, Marschall held leading positions in the field of seeds , initially until 1965 as Head of Seed Approval for Grains and Clover at the Federal Agricultural Research Institute in Oerlikon , from 1966 as Head of the Department of Crop Production and Seed Control at the Federal Research Institute for Agricultural Crop Production in Zurich-Reckenholz . During these decades he decisively determined the legal basis for seed approval and for variety tests in Switzerland. He was a longstanding board member of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) and its secretary from 1977 to 1980.

In addition to his main activity as a seed expert, Marschall continued to deal with fundamental problems in natural forage production in Switzerland and published several articles on this. Of these publications, his ecological and plant-sociological studies on grass grass and crested grass willows are to be emphasized .
