Franz Mezger

Franz Mezger OSB , often also butcher , (also Franciscus ; born October 25, 1632 in Ingolstadt as Johann Christoph Mezger ; † December 11, 1701 in Salzburg ) was a Benedictine priest , philosopher , historian and university professor .

Life

Mezger was the son of the Prince Archbishop's court chancellor under Paris Count von Lodron Johann Christoph Mezger (1594–1658). Together with his brother Joseph , he entered the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg on September 8, 1651 , where he received his training and was ordained a priest . He read his first Holy Mass on January 14, 1657 . After his ordination he was novice master and cleric moderator as well as librarian and abbey secretary. He was also President of the Congregatio Mariana. In 1668 he became a clerical director in St. Peter.

Mezger was from 1659 to 1661 and again from 1663 to 1665 professor of philosophy at the University of Salzburg . In 1665 he was promoted to Dr. theol. obtained his doctorate and moved to the theological faculty, where he taught moral theology until 1669 . He was also awarded a Dr. iur. utr. PhD. At both the Philosophical and the Theological Faculties he temporarily held the office of Dean . From 1671 to 1673 he was professor of philosophy at Ettal Abbey .

After his return from Ettal, Mezger became a confessor at Nonnberg Abbey . He was then prefect of the Konvikt from 1681 to 1688 and then again novice master and cleric moderator until his death. He also returned to the university, where he was professor of biblical studies and controversial theology from 1680 to 1688 and also taught canon law .

In addition to Joseph, the Benedictine Paul Mezger was his brother.
