Franz Neuhofer
Franz Karl Neuhofer (born September 8, 1870 in Freistadt , Upper Austria; † November 15, 1949 in Linz ) was an Austrian composer , music teacher , choir director and cathedral organist .
Live and act
Franz Neuhofer learned violin , cello and piano in his youth from his father Josef Neuhofer (1828–1906). He attended the teacher training college in Linz from 1885 to 1889 and met Anton Bruckner during this time . After finishing school in Freistadt, he became an elementary school teacher in 1889 and music professor at the local grammar school in 1895 . Between 1889 and 1903 he was the choirmaster of the men's choir in Freistadt and also founded his own school orchestra.
In 1903 he moved to Linz, where he became a high school professor and between 1905 and 1930 worked as a cathedral organist. In addition, Neuhofer was a teacher at the Linz Teacher Training Institute between 1912 and 1933. For the 60th anniversary of the Freistadt grammar school (1927) he composed the Missa academica , which was premiered under his direction in the Liebfrauenkirche . A Neuhofer community was formed in Linz in 1919, which promoted the distribution of Neuhofer's works through performances and printing until the end of the Second World War .
As a composer, Neuhofer succeeded Anton Bruckner and as such remained committed to the style of high romanticism . He mainly wrote church music and masses. In addition, he also set texts by contemporary writers, in particular by Edward Samhaber from Freiberg , and dealt with the history of music in Upper Austria.
Neuhofer was awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Freistadt. He was buried in a grave of honor in the St. Barbara cemetery in Linz .
In Freistadt and Linz a street and in Ried im Innkreis a path have been named after him. In Freistadt, Neuhoferstraße connects the barracks intersection with the main music school. In Linz, the street is in the Kleinmünchen district and connects Hausleitnerweg with Angerholzerweg. The Neuhoferweg in Ried lies between the Richard-Billinger-Weg and the Achleitnerstraße.
