Gymnasium (old building)

The Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Freistadt is a grammar school and a Realgymnasium in the city of Freistadt in Upper Austria .

history

The school is the oldest grammar school in the entire Mühlviertel . A Latin school was first mentioned in the city in 1543, which closed a few decades later due to a lack of students. In 1761 the Piarists started the second attempt at a Latin school, which was also closed in 1787 due to a lack of students. In February 1866, the municipal council under Mayor Kaspar Schwarz decided to set up a lower-level grammar school, the third attempt to establish the school type in the city. On December 25th of that year, Emperor Franz Joseph approved the construction of the school, which started operations as a boys' school at the beginning of the school year 1867/68. The school was then on the 2nd floor of the town hall, which was adapted for this purpose. In 1868/69 the town hall was raised by one floor to offer space for all students. The 5th grade (9th grade) was established in 1871, and a complete upper secondary school was not officially established until June 1872. In 1875 the first high school graduation was completed with eight students.

In 1887, after an inspection by the Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Paul Gautsch , the municipality was given the choice of either building a new school building by 1889 and paying 5000  guilders a year to the state treasury or of abolishing the grammar school. The city decided on the new building. Therefore, between 1888 and 1890, a new building was built in front of the Linzertor in the former Thury garden for around 111,000 guilders. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the emperor's reign, the grammar school was named Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Staatsgymnasium in 1890 .

In order to guarantee the number of students, the city was obliged to build a student hostel . In 1896, 211 students attended the school. In 1898 the student convict was opened in the former Kinsky Palace. The city paid the purchase and adaptation costs of around 20,000 guilders. In 1907 the first student was accepted as an intern. During the First World War , the military called in teachers and students of the higher grades for military service, thereby reducing the number of students from 182 in 1914 to 99 in 1917.

After the World War, the school was renamed Bundesgymnasium Freistadt , and in 1935 the old name was reintroduced. A bust of Emperor Franz Josef stood in the vestibule until 1938 . In the 1st Republic the previously forbidden middle school connections were able to establish themselves, of the three free-city connections only the K. Ö survived to this day . St. V. Nibelungia (founded 1924). The parents' association was founded in 1925 and Franz Neuhofer composed the Missa academica for the 60th anniversary in 1927 . In the school year 1933/34, with 262 students, the highest level of the interwar period was reached.

After the connection , the grammar school was converted into a high school for boys. The nearby student convict closed and became a Nazi student residence. The number of students rose to 270. As in the First World War, some teachers and the students of the higher grades were also assigned to the army in the Second World War . From autumn 1944 the first refugees were housed in the grammar school. In April 1945, classes had to be stopped and the school became a hospital . The grammar school moved to the Marianum building for a year, and all students had to repeat the school year 1944/45. In autumn 1946, lessons began again in the old school building.

In 1947 the humanistic grammar school became a secondary school, with compulsory Latin from the 3rd grade (7th grade). It was not until 1955 that the number of students climbed back to over 200 and the city handed the building over to the state . Since the number of schoolchildren increased regularly and the old building was too small, the first expansion and renovation of the old building followed in 1965-69. During this time the school introduced the two branches that still exist today - modern language and realistic. The second expansion followed in 1984 when a chemistry and physics hall was built. In addition, workrooms and IT rooms were created in the basement. The most recent expansion began in 2003. By 2005, the building from the 1960s was demolished and completely rebuilt. During this time, the students were housed in containers in front of the old building.
