Franz Philipp Reichsgraf von Sternberg (Czech František Filip hrabě ze Šternberka ) (born August 21, 1708 in Prague ; † January 9, 1786 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian nobleman and Austrian diplomat.

Life

He came from the important Bohemian noble family of the Sternberg . His parents were the Bohemian land law assessor and imperial councilor Franz Damian von Sternberg and his wife Maria Josepha von Trautmansdorf-Weinsberg, daughter of Johann Friedrich von Trautmansdorf-Weinsberg. When his father died in 1723 he was still a minor. His guardian bought the Chočenic estate for him on March 5, 1729 from Stephan Wilhelm Graf Kinsky. He was also the owner of the lords of Sasmuk , Častolovice , feudal lord of the city and the Liberosa castle, as well as the feudal estates of Sarko and Loskow.

In 1735 he achieved the status of imperial count for himself and his male heirs with a seat and vote in the Swabian Count College. When his male offspring died out, the dignity should pass to his two cousins, Counts Franz Adam and Johann Nepomuk von Sternberg and their male heirs. From 1745 to 1748 he was ambassador to Regensburg under Emperor Charles VII . During the Seven Years' War , Empress Maria Theresa sent him as an authorized minister to the royal Polish and Electoral Saxon courts in Warsaw and Dresden. He held this position for 16 years. In 1763 he received the Order of the Golden Fleece and two years later, in 1765, he was appointed real Colonel Hofmeister. He died in Vienna in 1786. His body was transferred to Sasmuk and laid to rest in the local Franciscan monastery.

In 1780 the county of Manderscheid- Blankenheim in the Eifel fell to his eldest son Franz Philipp Christian Reichsgraf von Sternberg, who had been married to Augusta Dorothea, heir to the last Count Johann Wilhelm von Manderscheid-Blankenheim, since 1762. As a house ruling directly from the empire , the Counts of Sternberg-Manderscheid belonged to the high nobility . The line expired in 1835. His daughter, Maria Leopoldina, Princess von und zu Liechtenstein , belonged to a ladies' circle of the Viennese high aristocracy, in which Emperor Joseph II also frequented.
