Franz Pokorny (theater director)
Franz Xaver Jan Pokorny (born December 22, 1797 in Lstiboř , † August 5, 1850 in Vienna-Meidling ) was an Austrian theater director.
Life
Pokorny, the son of a teacher in Bohemia, initially worked as a school assistant. In 1819 he became a clarinetist at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, then in 1822 at the Stadttheater in Preßburg , where he was promoted to orchestra director five years later. In 1835 Pokorny took over the city theater that was in debt and made it successful again. In 1836 he also leased the city theater in Baden and in 1837 the theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna; he bought the latter in 1840.
He also acquired the theater in Ödenburg in 1841 and finally the Theater an der Wien in 1845 as well .
Pokorny's theater bandmasters include personalities such as Franz von Suppè and Albert Lortzing . In the long term, however, he was unable to maintain the complex, cost-intensive game operations.
Pokorny's son Alois also worked as a theater director and director.
