Franz Süssmann (born April 27, 1926 , † February 23, 1987 in Schrobenhausen ) was a German football player. The goalkeeper played a total of 243 league games in what was then the first-class soccer league south from 1947 to 1958 with the clubs Swabia and BC Augsburg .

career

The goalkeeper Franz Süssmann came for the 1947/48 season from FC Schrobenhausen to the purple-whites of Swabia Augsburg in the Oberliga Süd. Coach Hans "Bumbes" Schmidt relied on Jānis Bebris in the goal of the Swabians in the first half of the season and the newcomer only made his league debut on the day of the catch-up game, February 1, 1948, in the away game against VfB Stuttgart. The game was lost with 1: 2 goals, but Sussmann made a total of 17 appearances in the course of the second half of the season. Swabian Augsburg finished tenth at the end of the round with the top performers Georg Lechner senior , Wilhelm Dziarstek and Wilhelm Struzina .

From his second year with the Swabians, 1948/49, Sussmann was the undisputed number one goal and was not missing in any game in four rounds in a row. The descent in the 1951/52 season under coach Emil Melcher could not prevent the support of the defense. Together with the Mannheim district club VfL Neckarau, Schwaben Augsburg was relegated to the 2nd South League in 1952. In the second year in the 2nd league , 1953/54, he won the championship and returned to the league for the 1954/55 round. In the third year after the league return, 1956/57 , Süssmann rose again with the Swabians level on points with the Stuttgarter Kickers and one point less than the local rivals BC Augsburg again in the second division. Sussmann completed his last league game with Swabian Augsburg on April 28, 1957 in a 3-0 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt. After a total of 221 league games for Swabia Augsburg, he moved to local rivals BCA after relegation for the 1957/58 season and thus remained in the Oberliga Süd.

At the side of Ulrich Biesinger and Helmut Haller , he completed another 22 league games and took twelfth place with the team from the Rosenaustadion . He ended his league career on the final day, April 14, 1958, in a 1: 5 home defeat against champions Karlsruher SC. Antoine Kohn (3) and Heinz Beck (2) scored the goals of the strong offensive guests in front of 22,000 spectators .

The games in the competition for the regional cup in 1949/50 were a high point in the sporting career of the goalkeeper of Swabia Augsburg. In the semi-finals on January 22, 1950 in Munich in front of 30,000 spectators, he guarded the goal of Bavaria's selection. In the 6-2 win against Lower Saxony, he formed the defensive of the victorious Bayern selection together with Jakob Streitle , Herbert Moll , Franz Hammerl , Oskar Hilner and Richard Gottinger . The Lower Saxony offensive forces around Hans Haferkamp , Fritz Apel , Adolf Vetter , Walter Schemel and Ernst-Otto Meyer could not prevail decisively. The final game took place on March 19, 1950 in Stuttgart in front of 89,000 spectators against the Palatinate. Bayern and goalkeeper Franz Süßmann won the 1949/50 regional cup with two goals from the Fürth center forward Horst Schade . The absence of the injured playmaker Fritz Walter on the part of the Palatinate helped ensure that the Bayern team's defensive line-up with Süßmann, Georg Pledl , Ludwig Merz , Gunther Baumann , Jakob Streitle and Herbert Moll remained clean.
