Franz Schönemann (politician)

Franz Schönemann (born September 3, 1868 in Seesen , † April 19, 1953 in Rottorf ) was a German lawyer , landowner and politician . From 1898 to 1919 he was mayor of the city of Helmstedt and from 1920 to 1922 a member of the Braunschweig regional assembly .

Life

Schönemann was born the son of a judge. After attending the Braunschweigisches Gymnasium in Holzminden , he did military service as a one-year volunteer from 1889 to 1890 . He then studied law at the University of Jena . During his studies in 1889 he became a member of the Teutonia Jena fraternity . In 1892 passed the first state examination and in 1896 the second state examination. He was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . After completing his studies, he initially worked as a court assessor at the Holzminden district court and then moved to the Holzminden district directorate as a government assessor .

Schönemann was elected mayor of the city of Helmstedt in the summer of 1898 and held the office until September 1919. During his tenure, the town hall was rebuilt and a poor house, an orphanage and a waterworks were built. In addition, there were structural extensions to sanitary and medical facilities. In addition to the mayor's office, Schönemann also acted as chairman of the board of trustees of the Marienberg agricultural school, Helmstedt.

From March 9, 1920, when he replaced the deceased Rudolf Marschall , until 1922 he was a member of the Braunschweig regional electoral association, a member of the Braunschweig regional assembly.

Franz Schönemann married in 1899. Together with his wife, he acquired the Rottorf manor near Königslutter am Elm , which he managed in the following years. Towards the end of the 1930s, he handed over the business of the farm to his son on a lease. He was also chairman of the board of the Königslutter AG sugar factory and member of the board of the Braunschweiger Ritterschaft.
