Franz Schneider (theologian)

Franz Schneider (born January 10, 1932 in Salnai ; † December 29, 2017 in Erfurt ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and liturgical scholar .

Life

Franz Schneider attended the Karl-Marx-Oberschule in Bernburg until 1951 and passed the Abitur there. From 1953 to 1957 he studied Catholic theology in Erfurt and was ordained a priest in Magdeburg in 1959. In 1965 he received his doctorate in Erfurt with the work The Sources for the Liturgy of the Erfurt Collegiate Church of St. Marien (Erfurt Cathedral) as a licentiate (Lic. Theol.).

From 1967 to 1976 he was spiritual at the Erfurt seminary . From 1974 he took on a teaching position for liturgics at the "Philosophical-Theological Studies Erfurt" (today the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Erfurt ) and worked there from 1977 to 1998 as a lecturer in liturgy. From 1979 to 1996 he was a member of the working group of the Liturgical Commission in the German-speaking area, from 1990 to 1996 he was an advisor to the Liturgy Commission of the German Bishops' Conference . On the occasion of his retirement in 2000, he was awarded the Ring of Honor by the German Liturgical Institute "in recognition of his services to the teaching of liturgical science and pastoral care" . In 2001 Schneider was appointed honorary cathedral chapter in the cathedral chapter of the diocese of Magdeburg .
