Franz Specht (linguist)

Franz Specht (born November 1, 1888 in Roßlau (Elbe) , † November 13, 1949 in Mainz ) was a German linguist. His research focused on the Indo-European roots of the Baltic languages .

Life

After studying German, history and classical philology and being appointed as a study assessor in 1913, he volunteered in 1914 as a war volunteer. After being wounded, he resigned from the army, received his doctorate in 1918 and published the book The Language and its Origin in 1921 . In 1923 it earned him a full professorship for comparative linguistics in Halle without habilitation .

In 1937 he moved to the University of Breslau and in 1943 to the University of Berlin . Member of the German National People's Party from 1918 to 1933, Specht joined the Stahlhelm in 1933 and the NSDAP in 1940 . In 1945 he was released. From 1946 Specht worked as a professor at the University of Mainz . He died a short time later.
