Franz Unterberger (born July 27, 1870 in Kirchbach (Carinthia) , † December 5, 1954 in Feldkirch ) was an Austrian politician ( CS ) and publisher. Unterberger was Feldkirch's mayor from 1914 to 1920 and from 1934 to 1938, a member of the state parliament from 1918/19 and a regional councilor in the Vorarlberg state government from 1934 to 1936, and a member of the Austrian National Council from 1923 to 1930 ( second and third legislative periods ).

Franz Unterberger was born on July 27, 1870 as the son of the landowner Franz Unterberger and his wife Maria in Kirchbach in the Carinthian Gail Valley . Unterberger attended elementary school in Kirchbach before he switched to high school in Klagenfurt . At first he worked as a bookstore assistant in Klagenfurt and Aachen, before he bought the branch of the Wagner university bookstore in Feldkirch in 1895, where he established the publishing bookstore Franz Unterberger in 1905. On October 14, 1897, Franz Unterberger married his wife Maria in Feldkirch, with whom he later had a daughter in 1906.

Unterberger was a member of the Feldkirch city ​​council as early as 1900 . From 1902 to 1904 and from 1909 to 1914 he was even active as a city councilor before he was elected mayor of Feldkirch for the first time in 1914, which he initially remained until 1920. In 1918 Unterberger became a member of the Vorarlberg provisional state assembly for the Christian Social Party . After the election of the first ordinary state parliament, however, he left it again on June 16, 1919. During the same period, Unterberger was automatically a member of the state council. On November 20, 1923, Franz Unterberger was elected member of the National Council for the Christian Social Party and sent to Vienna, where he held office until April 5, 1930, as Michael Jutz's successor . Back in Vorarlberg, Unterberger finally became a member of the Vorarlberg state government again in 1934 with the emergence of the corporate state as regional councilor for trade, commerce and industry , which he remained until January 31, 1936.

Unterberger also made a career in the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry . From 1914 to 1921 he was first councilor, from 1921 chairman of the trade section, 1921–1931 vice-president of the chamber and from 1931 to 1936, finally, president of the chamber of commerce and trade. After the war, Franz Unterberger became a member of the book trade committee. Since 1919 he was an honorary citizen of the city of Feldkirch and from 1921 he carried the honorary professional title of commercial councilor .
