Franz Xaver Baier

Franz Xaver Baier (born April 18, 1953 in Passau ) is a German phenomenologist , author and professor of architecture (Art + Design Research) at the University of Munich . Using scientific and artistic methods, Baier addresses the phenomenon “living space: in which we live”.

Life

Baier studied architecture , art history and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart and graduated as a graduate engineer for architecture and urban planning . He began early to deal with the philosophy of phenomenology, existentialism and philosophical-poetic forms of life, which he combined in life and work. Through several key experiences and stimulated by Rilke's Duineser Elegies , he discovered the existential “being in” as well as “the open” and the inner space as the primal constitution of human existence.

During a one-year break in the mid-1980s, which he spent in a remote country castle without technical media, Baier developed an expanded concept of living that opened up a cosmic constitution to him and conveyed a deep feeling of universal unity without deity.

In 1989 Baier received his doctorate with the interdisciplinary research work "Phenomenology of Living Space" at the University of Stuttgart. In the work he showed the spatial dimension of human existence, its permanent change and the spatial effect of everything that exists.

Baier has been Professor of Art + Design Research at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Munich since 1998 .

Baier's work consists of artistic and architectural drafts, temporary installations and texts. His main concern is to show how human existence begins far outside the body and how people live in invisible and deeper internal spaces.

"Frischespur", Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, 1992

In the early 1990s, Baier made a few artistic experiments with the museum and began to experiment with fresh apples. When he saw that some visitors in the museum saw these as fruit and ate them, while others saw the fruit as objects of art, he continued the topic. Among other things, the installations "Frischespur" in the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and "Fresh food injection in a museum landscape" at Solitude Castle were created . Using around 1000 kg of apples each, the apple was conceptually placed in the center of the given situations.

On the basis of his lively understanding of space and time, Baier wrote a pamphlet on this subject and published the book "Space: to an architecture of lived space" in 1996.

“Reality does not exist in itself, but is made through life patterns, ways of life, perceptual habits and contexts of meaning. So there is no such thing as space and time. Our living spaces are created concretely. What science and philosophy always exclude is constitutive. Fashion, weather, food, architecture, cinema, life figures, fun, space and time emerge from this. Those who set up in a reality in itself or in "creation" only make themselves comfortable in rooms that others have opened up. He's just too lazy to build his own space. "

- Franz Xaver Baier : The room, introduction

The book sparked great interest in this topic in the art and architecture scene, which is still discussed today under the term spatial turn : “Baier's book 'Der Raum' can be read as one of the earliest references to the 'spatial turn' in Germany . ”In numerous other writings, Baier shows the consequences that arise from his spatial theory. Baier worked with numerous scientists, architects, artists, curators and institutions. These include u. a. Gernot Böhme , Jeppe Hein , Michael Sailstorfer , Walter Niedermayr , Hans Schabus, Six + Petritsch, Moritz Küng, Manfred Rothenberger, Max Hollein , Deutsches Architekturmuseum Frankfurt , Bund Deutscher Architekten , Kunstforum International, deSingle Antwerpen, Kunsthalle Wien , Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Vienna, Vienna Secession , New Society for Fine Arts Berlin, AA London , Institute for Modern Art Nuremberg. The thematic diversity concerns liveliness, perception, sensuality, building, living, beauty, thermal aesthetics, as well as a new understanding of religion and spirituality.

In order to point out invisible effects in the living space and to address an ecologically attuned expansion of consciousness, for example in relation to fine dust pollution from fireworks , Baier experiments with various means of expression and forms. In 2016, as part of the project "Rehabilitation of common greenery" around the Munich court garden , Baier took a kind of "weed walk" under the title "Urban Munich weeds as an indication of higher-order communities", in which he examined the connections between cracks, crevices, depths, Showed underground, spontaneity, wildness, culture, humus and humanity. In 2017 he finished the manuscript “Stadt Land Schloss”, in which he describes the spiritual path of a young man into universal connection with fictional means.
