Spatial turn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As spatial turn (from the Latin. Spatium space ", Eng. Turn, turn), also topological reversal , rare space critical turning point , a since the late 1980s paradigm shift in the cultural and social sciences refers to the the room or the geographical space as a cultural dimension perceives again. A paradigm shift is so far in front, accompanied as the fact that not only the time is at the heart of cultural studies research, as in the Modern was the case, but now you also the space is put to the side.

The English-language naming of the topological turn is ambiguous. Use: “spatial turn”, “topographical turn” and “topological turn”. As Döring / Thielmann determine, these terms are by no means to be used synonymously. Doris Bachmann-Medick, for example, describes the topological turn as an undercurrent of the spatial turn.

development

The Nazi ideology and the wars of conquest of the Nazi regime in the Second World War to create a new " living space in the East " initially discredited the preoccupation with cultural and geographical areas in Germany after the Second World War. It was not until the 1980s that this perspective became increasingly interesting again, thanks above all to the geographers David Harvey , Edward Soja , Derek Gregory , Steve Pile , and Doreen Massey . With the elimination of the Cold War blocs and the opening of borders, the social and cultural sciences became more interested in geographical phenomena. At the same time, the Internet created new cultural spaces that could no longer be captured by the categories of a physical space, but instead led to densification of space on a media level.

New understanding of space

As can be seen particularly well in the virtual space of the Internet, a new conception of space is necessary here, which no longer understands the space as a container in which groups of people and cultures are located. Instead, the space now appears as the result of social relationships that arise from the interests and actions of individual people or groups; the natural (or real) space is supplemented by the socially and culturally reshaped space perception or construction that is dominant for the subject.

For the topological turning point to actually represent a paradigm shift, it is therefore not enough for space to become the object of investigation. Instead, an attempt must be made to think spatially and to approach the object with spatial categories from the beginning of the investigation. Only then does the space become a new analysis category.

Traditionally, architecture as a discipline is a key point of contact when it comes to questions of changing understanding of spatial dynamics. The reference to location in architecture is a reflection of the “human being, including his artifacts, integrated into the totality of all that exists”.
