Franz Xaver Engelhart (born March 4, 1861 in Geiselhöring ; † July 14, 1924 in Regensburg ) was a German Catholic priest , church musician , choir director and composer .

Life

Engelhart first attended the elementary school in Geiselhöring, and later from 1872 to 1882 the old grammar school in Regensburg. From 1882 to 1887 he studied theology at the Lyceum (later the Philosophical-Theological University) in Regensburg. He was ordained a priest on July 3, 1887 . From 1887 to 1889 he worked as a cooperator in Furth im Wald , from 1889 as curate in Regensburg-Karthaus.

From 1891 until his death in 1924 he was the director of the Regensburger Domspatzen at Regensburg Cathedral , with whom he undertook the first major concert tour to Prague . From 1903 he was also the diocesan president of the General Association of Cecilia of the Diocese of Regensburg .

Acting as cathedral music director

It was thanks to Franz Xaver Engelhart that the Regensburg Cathedral Choir became known far beyond Regensburg and is still highly regarded worldwide. From the beginning of 24 boys' choir, he expanded the choir and also recorded male voices from the seminary.

One year after taking office, the cathedral choir received permission to sing at a secular concert outside of Regensburg Cathedral. A high point of these secular appearances were the lectures of the cathedral choir at the "Second Bavarian Music Festival" at Whitsun 1904 in Regensburg (including a mass by Orlando di Lasso ). In 1910, the cathedral choir made its first trip abroad to Prague under his leadership.

Compositional work

Of his 102 church music works only a few are left, and these are rarely heard. They were believed to be too sentimental. Many of his songs had become folk songs in the 1930s to 1950s. The Marienlieder Brightly shines a star , If I were a bell and Maria Rosary Queen were gladly sung in May devotions of that time. His secular compositions were characterized by fine humor. His Dampfnudl-Lied (Op. 36,1) in particular was very well known at the time.

The best-known songs composed by Engelhart include If I were a little bell or Das Ave-Maria-Glöcklein .

Discography (selection)

The Dampfnudl song is also included on two other CDs by the Spatzen Quartet ( … take my heart with you on the journey and Das Fest der Bayern ). Engelhart's menu march (op.44) can also be found on the latter .

Honors

A street in Geiselhöring is named after him.
