Franz Xaver Grass (born June 14, 1758 in Hall in Tirol ; † December 23, 1833 in Neustift , South Tyrol ) was an Austrian monk , librarian and orientalist .

Life

Franz Xaver Grass devoted himself to the clergy and entered the Neustift monastery near Brixen as an Augustinian canon in 1776 , where he was ordained priest in 1781 . Having acquired considerable knowledge, his superiors chose him to teach theology in the monastery . In 1787 he was appointed librarian of the monastery and in 1791 professor of theology. As a librarian, he tried to sift through and organize the writings entrusted to him. To this endeavor the bibliography owes several works that have been worked out with great precision:

  • Directory of typographic monuments from the 15th century, which are in the library of the regulated canon monastery of St. Augustine in Neustift in Tyrol , Brixen 1789
  • Directory of some book curiosities from the 16th and 17th centuries, which are in the library of the regulated canon monastery of St. Augustine in Neustift in Tyrol , Brixen 1790
  • Addendum to the typographic monuments from the 15th century and book curiosities from the 16th and 17th centuries , Brixen 1791

At a time when the bibliography in Germany was still very poor in resources for knowing the old prints from the first century after the invention of the printing press , the works mentioned by Grass enjoyed great popularity, especially because of their facsimiles, and were widely used. Later they were supplanted by better works. Grass was also an excellent knowledge of the Oriental languages, but several of his writings went unprinted.

In 1800 Grass became parish vicar of Natz and in 1816 dean of the Neustift monastery, where he died in 1833 at the age of 75.
