Franz Xaver Riedel (born October 15, 1738 in Mautern an der Donau , † October 30, 1773 in Güns (Hungary) ) was an Austrian Jesuit , teacher and author .

Life

Riedel entered the Jesuit novitiate at the age of 16 and received a varied education. After his profession he worked as a teacher for ancient languages ​​and literature , poetics and architecture at Jesuit grammar schools in Graz and Linz and most recently at the Theresian Knight Academy in Vienna . Because of the repeal of the Jesuit order in 1773, he went to Güns, where he died at the age of 35 that same year.

Riedel was friends with the Jesuit scholar Michael Denis . Of his writings, the reworking of Latin hymns, songs of the church translated from the Roman times of the day and the missal (published in 1773) had the greatest lasting effect. They also contain the song of your Savior, your teacher , which is sung much to this day , Riedel's transmission of the Corpus Christi hymn Lauda Sion Salvatorem , which is contained in most parts of the praise of God diocese. His poetic language is influenced by Klopstock .
