Guido Maria Dreves (born October 27, 1854 in Hamburg , † June 1, 1909 in Mitwitz near Kronach (Upper Franconia)) was a German Jesuit , hymnologist and spiritual poet . He was the son of the notary and poet Lebrecht Blücher Dreves (1816–1870).

biography

Dreves already had contact with the Jesuits at school, as he attended the Stella Matutina grammar school in Feldkirch from 1861 . After completing his training, he immediately entered the Jesuit order in November 1869. He completed his novitiate in Gorheim and then studied at the Jesuit College in Münster , at the Ordenshaus in Blijenbeek Castle in the Netherlands and at the Jesuit College in Ditton-Hall in Shropshire (England). He devoted his research mainly to the medieval Latin hymn.

He is particularly important as the author and editor of Analecta hymnica medii aevi , the largest collection of medieval Latin poetry to date ( hymns , sequences , tropes , rhyming offices and psalteries ). Dreves searched libraries all over Europe with astonishing diligence for old manuscripts and cradle prints . From 1886 to 1926, 55 volumes of Analecta appeared , from volume 25 Clemens Blume was co-editor.
