Franz Zeilner 1971

Franz Zeilner (born September 13, 1953 ) is an author, professor and former Austrian canoeist who practiced white water sports (slalom and downhill) and canoe racing as an all-rounder . He was often Austrian national champion in several disciplines, member of the Olympic B-team 1972 Munich (canoe slalom K1) and participant in two world championships in the white water run in the K1 and in the white water European Cup 1974 (downhill K1). He achieved international success in white water sports, especially on classic racetracks.

biography

Zeilner began canoeing in 1966 in Steyr , where he previously trained floor and apparatus gymnastics for a short time. In 1969 he achieved his first of a total of 16 Austrian state championship titles in the master class in the team competition (3 × K1 slalom) with Kurt Presslmayr and Günter Tremba. In 1970 he won the team competition in canoe slalom at the European youth canoe competitions with Gerhard Peinhaupt and Norbert Sattler. In 1971 he set the fastest time of the day in the international canoe slalom in the Lieserschlucht. In this year the training and racing community began with Gerhard Peinhaupt, with whom he remained undefeated in canoe racing in K2 in the youth and juniors in Austria. The joint training with top athletes brought a level of performance that was necessary for inclusion in the Olympic B squad for the Olympic Summer Games in Munich 1972 (Canoe Slalom K1), for participation in two world championships ( 1973 Muotathal / Switzerland and 1975 Skopje / Yugoslavia) in the white water run (K1 ) and to a starting place in the White Water European Cup (EC) 1974 (departure K1). In the then newly founded WW European Cup, the name of which was later changed to World Cup, he also wrote part of sports history. That was for canoeing in Austria with the athletes Gerhard Peinhaupt, Gerda Aumayr (WW downhill), Norbert Sattler and Peter Fauster (WW slalom) and the international sports official Walter Aumayr.

Zeilner is one of the first athletes in Austria to be sponsored by the Austrian Sports Aid due to his sporting success . In the jubilee book 40 Years of Österreichische Sporthilfe 1971–2011 he was considered by sports journalists among the 40 winners for the Austrian Sporthilfe.

He was the first lecturer at an Austrian university who taught canoeing and alpine kayaking as a practical elective for students. His university textbook entitled Canoeing, Competitive and Recreational Sports, is widespread in many countries. Canoeing, especially in school sports, was also a topic in his lecture Fundamentals of Sports Law and Sports Organization at the University of Salzburg , where he was a university lecturer and research assistant from 1989 to 2009. He also gave courses on white water sports, legal issues relating to sports, paddling and alpine kayaking and paddling at the University of Vienna .

Zeilner is married to a teacher and has one son

River trips

In addition to competitive sports and after the end of the competition period, Franz Zeilner also drove into wild rivers up to difficulty levels five and above. These were mainly rivers in Austria such as the Enns or sections of the Enns in the Gesäuses area, the Koppentraun, the Lammeröfen, the Salzachöfen etc.

On October 30, 1971, after the end of the competition season, the Salzachöfen - which the Austrian Adolf Anderle from the Academic Kayak Club in Vienna was able to climb for the first time in 1931 and where a total of thirty trips had been made by 1950, some of them unsuccessfully - were used in very difficult conditions. Canoeists from competitive sports, from the traditional Austrian canoeing clubs Forelle Steyr (Kurt Presslmayr, Franz Zeilner ), Klagenfurt kayak club (Heinz Dopsch, Manfred Pock, Norbert Sattler, Helmar Steindl, Heimo Müllneritsch, Erich Wilhelmer) and Union Kanu Klub Wien (Michael Neudecker ), met at the end of the 1971 competition season near Pass Lueg to prepare for the legendary Salzachöfen.

The entry with the slalom racing boats was about 500 meters above the gorge. The key points were the entrance surge into the Salzachöfen, followed by river passages with massive boulders and difficult passages. Especially the entrance to the so-called "Dom", a difficultly blocked slope. The cathedral, an imposing natural spectacle, was a highlight of the tour. About fifty meters high above the river, the Hagen and Tennengebirge arches here to form a dome of enormous dimensions, which is closed at the top by huge clamping blocks (from one to one Path accessible rock opening, the so-called "pulpit", a view of the outside of the cathedral is possible). The exit from the cathedral was followed by very difficult river passages, the most difficult of which was the so-called "horseshoe". Pressed together by large rocks, the river flows head-on towards a huge boulder, where it forms a heavy rebound, a massive funnel eddy and "washed out" rock faces. With the exit from the horseshoe, the efforts were over. The Austrian canoeists successfully navigated the Salzachöfen on October 30, 1971.
