Franziska Berg (born January 1, 1813 in Mannheim , † April 22, 1893 in Dresden ) was a German singer and actress .

Life

Berg was accepted into the singing school in Mannheim, where she was born, and in 1828 engaged for choir and small roles at the court theater . In 1829 she continued her career in Würzburg .

As the successor to Julie Rettich , Franziska Berg had been a member of the court theater in Dresden since 1831 . There she also appeared on stage in 1841 at the inauguration of the first Semperoper as Leonore in the Torquato Tasso by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Her voice had a soulful sound and was especially enchanting in expressing pain and enthusiasm. Her artistic achievements were characterized by natural expression and harmony of the game; even in the highest affect she retained a fine temper.

Still quite young, she began to play sedate heroines and heroic mothers in tragedy ; later, not without luck , she also asserted herself in the comedy through fine characteristics and amiable humor. Countess Orsina in Emilia Galotti , Lady Macbeth , Phaedra and Isabella in the Bride of Messina were brilliant performances in their repertoire.

On September 1, 1881, she celebrated her 50th anniversary as an artist.

In 1889, after almost six decades [!] As an actress, she said goodbye to the stage and died on April 22, 1893 in Dresden. Her grave is in the Old Catholic Cemetery .
