Franziska (Fanny) Romana Ursula von Hoffnaaß (born October 18, 1831 at Maxlrain Castle (Upper Bavaria); † December 31, 1892 in Munich ; born Franziska Jägerhuber ) was a German poet and the wife of the composer Josef Gabriel Rheinberger .

Live and act

Franziska von Hoffnaaß was an educated woman who spoke several languages and was an artist. She made music, drew and was literary - in addition to poems, she also published a travel guide.

In 1852 she married Lieutenant Ludwig von Hoffnaaß (1828–1865), a grandson of the Mannheim painter Johann Wilhelm Hoffnas . After Hoffnaaß's death in 1867 she married the composer Josef Gabriel Rheinberger , who came from Liechtenstein and worked in Munich . After the marriage, Rheinberger acquired her citizenship in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Fanny Rheinberger left diaries that are interesting in terms of contemporary history and also revealing about life together with Rheinberger. This reflects her great influence on Rheinberger's compositional work.

Fanny advised her husband on the choice of text. She wrote the libretto of his oratorio Christoforus (op.120), which was premiered in 1882 in the great hall of the booksellers' exchange in Leipzig, as well as the singspiel Das Zauberwort (op.153) from 1888, freely based on the story of Kalif Storch . Rheinberger's Christmas cantata Der Stern von Bethlehem op. 164 is based on her cycle of poems, Der Stern von Bethlehem , written in 1889. However, she died before her husband could complete the work.

Out of grief that was never overcome, Rheinberger did not attend a single one of the numerous performances of their joint work. Later he once said of the cantata: "The real nerve of music is the longing for happiness that always recedes before us."
