Franziskus Eisenbach (born May 1, 1943 in Groß Strehlitz , Upper Silesia ) is auxiliary bishop emeritus in Mainz .

Life

Eisenbach's family moved from his birthplace in Groß Strehlitz to Neckarsteinach in the Odenwald in 1951 . After graduation Francis Eisenbach studied philosophy and theology and received on July 30 in 1967 by the then Bishop of Mainz, Hermann Volk , the ordination . Eisenbach held his first position as chaplain from 1968 to 1971 in Bad Nauheim . From 1971 to 1975 he was secretary to Bishop Hermann Volk. In 1975 Eisenbach resumed his studies and received his doctorate at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg under Karl Lehmann ; The thesis topic was The Presence of Christ in Worship. Systematic studies on the liturgy constitution of the Second Vatican Council . In October 1980 Eisenbach was appointed head of the retreat house of the Diocese of Mainz in Dieburg, as well as the management of the diocesan office for professions of the church in Mainz.

On March 17, 1988 Pope John Paul II appointed auxiliary bishop in Mainz with the titular bishopric of Sigus . He was consecrated as bishop on April 24, 1988 by Bishop Karl Lehmann of Mainz, co-consecrators were the retired Bishop of Mainz Hermann Cardinal Volk and the auxiliary bishop of Mainz Wolfgang Rolly . Franziskus Eisenbach chose the episcopal motto In Laudem Gloriae Suae ("In praise of his glory"). As a result, Eisenbach headed, among other things, the Mainz Institute for the spiritual accompaniment of full-time pastoral workers and was also responsible for the consecrated virgins .

In 2000, Eisenbach was accused by the Mainz professor Änne Bäumer of having carried out unauthorized major exorcism and sexual acts on her. She reported him for assault and sexual abuse as part of a pastoral care relationship. The Mainz diocese leadership denied the exorcism, but admitted "healing and liberation prayers". In April 2001, the Mainz public prosecutor closed the proceedings against Eisenbach for lack of suspicion. An enforcement action brought by the plaintiff at the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz was dismissed in November 2001. A preliminary investigation by the Holy See , among other things on account of the allegation of violation of the secrecy of confession , did not lead to an ecclesiastical criminal case. However, Eisenbach had to resign from his office after a conversation with the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Josef Cardinal Ratzinger .

On April 16, 2002, Eisenbach renounced the office of auxiliary bishop in Mainz and headed the parish of the Holy Cross in Bad Wimpfen from December 2002 to November 2011 . He then worked there as parish vicar until May 2013 . Since then, Franziskus Eisenbach has continued to live as a retired chaplain in Bad Wimpfen, where he still functions as Rector ecclesiae of the local collegiate church of St. Peter .
