The Fraternitas Arctica is a student union in Riga . Founded in 1880, it is the only Russian student union in the world today. In her goals and ideals she is close to the German corps: lifelong friendship, preservation of the academic tradition of Russia and tolerance towards other nationalities.

history

Foundation in Riga

15 fellow students and 11 fencing bodists from the suspended Borysthenia joined forces with other students from the Riga Polytechnic on October 21, 1880 and founded the Russian Fraternitas Arctica. The colors were initially gold-gray-red, but were changed to gold-black-red in Germany due to a connection of the same color. The federation was admitted to the Riga Chargierten-Convent (C! C!) On November 6, 1880 . The official announcement the next day has since been considered the foundation date. It can be found in the eleven golden dots and seven loops around the circle of the black-gold-red lid . The motto is Р.С.Т. - Рцы Слово Твердо (Rci slovo tvjordo) (Lat. Vīrs un vārds , German: one man, one word ). The first Chargierten were the Senior David judge who Consenior Victor Brokmiller which Subsenior Ivan Jevecky and Olderman Karl Koch. With the Polish connections Arconia and Korporacja Akademicka Welecja , Arctica supported the first Latvian connection Selonia in their efforts to gain recognition.

Moscow

When the Polytechnic was relocated to Moscow in 1915 because of the First World War , Arctica moved with it. Although most of the members were drafted into the Imperial Russian Army , active operations could be maintained until September 1, 1916. When the Philistine Society was founded in 1921 , it was found that only 55 of the 455 members of the Arctica had survived the World War, the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War .

return

With three fellow students and a fencing bodist, Arctica resumed active operations at the University of Latvia on February 8, 1922 . On December 31, 1922 she became a member of the Presidential Convention (Prezidiju Konvent, P! K!). In the winter semester of 1922, 26 foxes became active. In the winter semester of 1924 (1924 II) and in the summer semester of 1933 (1933 I), Arctica presided over the Presidential Convention.

In 1940 the Arctica, which had 180 members at the time, was dissolved by the Council of Ministers of the USSR . Initially reconstituted in Germany after World War II , she moved to the United States in the 1950s . Since January 1988 it had its convent quarters in Canada . There she was involved in the Association of Latvian Fraternities (Latvijas Korporāciju Apvienība, L! K! A!). At the same time, active operations in Latvia were kept secret and on a small scale. Foxes were recorded and a Kommersbuch was published. Even before Latvia's independence was restored , the members decided on May 15, 1990 in the old corporation house at 8 Kleine Sandstrasse to reconstitute their union on the basis of the old statutes. A branch has been in place in Tartu / Estonia since October 2012. In the 132 years of its history, 800 students have joined the Fraternitas Arctica. Half became Philistines.
