Frauenopfer is a 1921, silent German chamber drama film directed by Karl Grune with Henny Porten and Wilhelm Dieterle in the leading roles.

action

An old count has been keeping an eye on the granddaughter of his castle steward for some time. The young Maria, however, is in love with the young painter Walter, who, however, is only moderately talented as an artist. The two marry and have one child. However, the count does not want to give up his desire for Maria and now chooses another way to sneak her favor. Since Walter's picture sales leave much to be desired, the count regularly buys up his oeuvre through a straw man, thereby giving the young family financial air. For this way out of the financial worries, the old man also demands a price: He wants nothing more and nothing less than Maria's favor.

One day Walter is lured out of his town by a bogus order from the count, so that the old man can finally have a free run with the newlywed mother. Mary is deeply reluctant inside, but still ready to give (almost) everything for the success of her husband and the happiness of the family. When the old man harassed her so violently and with little gallantism and Maria remembers her husband's painter's opinion that nothing beats the truth to him, she sees no other way out than to seek suicide as her personal sacrifice of a woman. Maria chooses a dagger and stabs herself in the heart.

Production notes

Frauenopfer originated in the second half of 1921, passed film censorship on January 7, 1922 and was banned from young people. The premiere took place on February 15, 1922 in Berlin's Mozart Hall. The length of the four-act vehicle was 1839 meters.

The buildings are by Paul Leni , Porten-Gatte Wilhelm von Kaufmann was in charge of production.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The subject shifts the problem of the chamber play into a questionable phase. The ' back stairs ' style has been expanded even more towards purely miming, unfortunately with the materiality being put aside. The presentation met all requirements, Dieterle in particular came to maturity. The presentation did without a large structure and worked mainly with bay windows and corners, which, however, deprived it of the possibility of underlining the game scenes to a certain extent. The photography was very good. "
