Friedrich August Zimmermann (born August 10, 1805 in Roßwein , † April 9, 1876 in Dresden ) was a German painter and lithographer . His best known works include the views of famous Saxon personalities, several of whom are in the Saxonia series . Museum for Saxon Patriotic Studies.

Life

Zimmermann first attended the drawing school in Meißen and was accepted into the Dresden Art Academy in 1821. Ferdinand Hartmann was one of his teachers . He created portraits and biblical scenes in oil painting before it for financial reasons as an autodidact of porcelain painting turned. In 1830 he received a two-year scholarship to continue his education in Munich and Vienna . Returning to Dresden, from 1833 onwards he mainly created genre paintings , the objects of which were often taken from popular life in Tyrol. From 1834 he worked as a lithographer for the magazine Saxonia . All portrait prints in this magazine up to 1841 were probably made exclusively by Zimmermann. In 1838 he went on a study trip to Italy , in 1846/47 he stayed temporarily in Leipzig , after which he lived and worked again in Dresden.
