The Graf von Charolais is a German silent film drama directed by Karl Grune from 1922. The main roles are played by Eva May , Wilhelm Dieterle and Eugen Klöpfer .
action
Somewhere in medieval Burgundy . The old Count of Charolais is an excellent general, but completely impoverished. At the moment of the peace he had last fought for with his deeds, a bullet fired from behind hit him and took his life. But despite his merits, the poor man is denied a stately burial. An old state law provides for this, because the creditors are allowed to hold back the debtor's corpse as a kind of pledge and refuse the burial until a friend or a well-meaning person pays the dead man's debts. And so the old man's corpse goes into the debtor's tower. How could it come to this? The old Charolais had gone into debt so that he would never have to starve his soldiers and mercenaries, badly paid by the state, and instead financed their supplies with his own means. The young Charolais cannot raise the amount needed to redeem the old man's body. For him, who loved his father dearly, this situation is an immense torture.
Salvation is only approaching in the person of an old Senate President. The wise man to whom this case is being put to a decision is impressed by the self-sacrifice of the young Charolais and hopes to have found in him the ideal son-in-law, the future of his daughter Désirée. The powerful civil servant then pays the dead man's debts, transfers his property to the young Charolais and gives him his daughter as a wife. But both happiness does not last long. One day, Désirée is innocently suspected by her cousin of having committed adultery. When Charolais, her husband, finds out about it, he kills him. But he puts his wife under the jurisdiction of her own father, who is legally obliged to condemn his own flesh and blood to death for adultery. This should be done by burning while still alive. Désirée is already at the stake when suddenly the rain sets in, prevents this cruel verdict from being carried out and saves Désirée's life. The people recognize this interference by nature as a judgment of God. Charolais, who had already doubted his judgment, deeply regrets his ruthlessness and takes his wife back home.
Production notes
The Graf von Charolais was shot in Berlin from March 1922, passed film censorship on August 14, 1922 and was banned from youth. The premiere took place on September 8, 1922. The length of the six-acter was 2812 meters.
The buildings come from Karl Görge and were implemented by Robert Neppach .
Rudolf Rittner , who has been retired as a stage actor for 15 years , made his film debut here.
Literary template
The author of the literary model, Richard Beer-Hofmann , had been writing the tragedy for two and three quarters of years up to September 1904. On February 10, 1905, the play celebrated its theater premiere in Munich. Unlike Beer-Hofmann's play, the film has a conciliatory ending.
criticism
Paimann's film lists summed up: "The subject deviates in some points to its advantage compared to the stage works serving as a reproach and is kept enthralling throughout, just as the direction also commendably subordinated the visual impact of the play scene. The presentation is careful work Presentation excellent, especially the couple Dieterle-May (Count and Countess) and last but not least Klöpfer as president. "
