Frauke Kraas

Frauke Kraas (born August 28, 1962 in Lüdenscheid ) is a German geographer and currently professor of urban and cultural geography at the Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne .

academic career

After studying geography, biology, ethnology and philosophy from 1981 to 1987 at the Universities of Bochum and Münster, she worked there as a research assistant at the Institute for Geography until her doctorate in 1991 with the dissertation : The Rhaetoromanians of Graubünden , peripheralization of a minority . In 1989/99 she carried out research as a research assistant, research assistant and most recently senior assistant at the Geographical Institute of the University of Bonn . In 1996 she completed her habilitation with the thesis Development Dynamics and Governance of the Greater Bangkok Area , on the importance of socio-cultural influencing factors in the megacity . In 1997 she was awarded the Gerhard Hess Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for this work . The DFG financed her further stay in Bonn as a Heisenberg fellow from 1999–2000 .

Since 2000 Kraas has been Professor of Anthropogeography ( C4 ) at the Geographical Institute of the University of Cologne. In 2004 she was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . She has been a member of the Leopoldina since 2009 .

Ms. Kraas has been involved in a large number of national (DFG) and international institutions and committees in her subject, including, for example, as spokeswoman for the federal jury in the field of geo and spatial sciences at the Jugend forscht competition or as Vice President of the GeoUnion - Alfred Wegener Foundation .
