course

The stream rises in the Lachwald, between Fraulautern , Saarwellingen and Hülzweiler .

From there it first flows westwards and flows into the fish pond in Fraulautern-Kreuzberg . Its further course leads it in a south-westerly direction into Fraulautern, first through the local recreation area Fraulauterner Bach , to the Fraulauterner Unterdorf . It has been flowing this route (for urban planning reasons) partly underground since the 1980s, but for the most part still above ground. In the lower village, in the area of the old monastery , the Lauterbach flows into the Saar .

Tributaries

Shortly after the source of the brook, on the border between Fraulautern and Hülzweiler, the small Fürstbach from Hülzweiler flows into the Lauterbach.

Namesake for female authors

The Lauterbach contributed significantly to the foundation of the village and the naming of Fraulautern. Due to the fertile soil on the bank of the water, the area offered ideal living conditions. The place name Fraulautern, originally Vrowenlutren, derives from the women, i.e. the nuns of the monastery founded at the confluence with the Saar ( Abbey Fraulautern ), as well as from the probably Celtic word "Lutra" or "Lutera" (" place on clear water " ), which refers to the Lauterbach.

Documents prove that the spelling of Lautern has many variants: 1154, "Lutera", 1160, "Luthra", 1174, "Luthra" and "Lutrensis", 1183, "Lutrea", 1212, "Lutra" and "Lutre", 1225, "Lutream", 1234, "Lutteren", 1236, "Lutrasupra", 1250, "Luytra" and "Lutres sur Saire".

Mills

Similar to the neighboring district of Roden , through which the Ellbach flows, there were also several mills in Fraulautern that could be operated by the flowing water. These were used for grinding grain and for the tanning industry. In a grinding process has been made of bark blaze produced what was needed by the tanning industry. Before it was incorporated into the city of Saarlouis in 1936, there were two mills in what was then Mühlenstraße (now Jahnstraße ). One of the mills was the Zapps Mill with a one-story building, stables, barn, house and mill. The second mill, Mühle Schönen (colloquially Schön's Mühle ), was used to grind grain. The former building with mill, house and stables burned down around 1919. After the transfer to the municipality, the mill was rebuilt and demolished in the 1960s due to a settlement expansion.

Others

On September 21, 2013, the Lauterbach was contaminated by around 300 liters of diesel fuel that had entered the brook near the Ostring industrial area . The contaminated oil-water mixture had to be pumped out and disposed of by a specialist company. The water in the Lauterbach is usually quite clear and clean compared to other streams.
