The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) is a research facility of the Fraunhofer Society . The institute is based in Kassel in northern Hesse . The Fraunhofer IEE research for the transformation of energy systems and develops solutions for technical and economic challenges, to further reduce the cost of renewable energy, to secure supplies despite volatile generation, grid stability at a high level and to ensure the energy transition to a to lead economic success. It has established itself in the business areas of energy industry and energy system technology .

history

The State of Hesse founded the Institute for Solar Energy Supply Technology ISET in 1988 on the initiative of Werner Kleinkauf as an independent affiliated institute of the University of Kassel . The focus was on research into system technology for the use of renewable energies.

From the Institute for Solar Energy Supply Technology ISET under the direction of Jürgen Schmid and the former Fraunhofer Center for Wind Energy and Marine Technology in Bremerhaven , the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES was founded in 2009 with the institute sections Wind Energy (Northwest) and Energy System Technology (Kassel) .

Today's Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE emerged from the Energy System Technology section of Fraunhofer IWES in 2018. Since its foundation, Fraunhofer IWES had grown to almost 600 employees in 2018. Both parts of the institute had successfully developed largely independent profiles in terms of their strategic orientation. That is why the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has been running the institute sections as independent institutes since January 2018.

Business areas

The Fraunhofer IEE is divided into the two business areas of energy management and energy system technology .

Energy industry division

The energy sector sells products and services to support the planning and operation of energy supply structures and their components.

The energy sector is divided into five business areas:

Energy system technology division

The energy system technology division provides solutions for the effective use of renewable energies, storage systems and electric vehicles in current and future supply structures, taking into account the system coupling of electricity, heat, gas and transport.

There are six business areas in the energy system technology sector:

research

The competence fields of the Fraunhofer IEE aggregate the necessary skills for the realization of the business areas. They include the skills and experience of scientists, their equipment with laboratories and test facilities, their networking in the scientific community as well as patents and IPRs .

The Fraunhofer IEE researches in the six areas of competence:

  • Energy industry and system design
  • Energy meteorology and renewable resources
  • Energy information
  • Energy process engineering
  • Electrical networks
  • Device and system technology

Cooperations

The Fraunhofer IEE works closely with the Universities of Kassel, Hanover and Darmstadt. Within the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, additional competencies and experience of the partner institutes are developed, in particular through the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance and the Fraunhofer Networks for Wind Energy and Intelligent Energy Networks. The Hessian Biogas Research Center at the Eichhof Agricultural Center in Bad Hersfeld is operated jointly with the Hessen State Agriculture Office and the Hessian State Laboratory.

The Fraunhofer-IEE works with various public and industrial research institutions on a national and international level. The practicality of the Fraunhofer IEE is documented, among other things, in project collaborations with industry and direct orders from companies. Together with other non-university German research institutes, the Fraunhofer IEE has joined forces in the Renewable Energy Research Group FVEE. On the initiative of Fraunhofer IEE, European laboratories and research institutes in the field of decentralized energy sources have founded the DERlab network. Fraunhofer IEE is a member of the European Energy Research Alliance EERA, the association of European public research centers and universities.

The research results are incorporated into standardization through the collaboration of scientists from the institute in national and international bodies such as DKE , CENELEC and IEC . As a technical advisor, the Fraunhofer IEE is also involved in political and economic framework conditions. For example in the design of the Renewable Energy Sources Act, the development of offshore wind energy use and the development of future energy supply structures.

Infrastructure

The Fraunhofer-IEE employs over 350 scientists, employees and students and generates around 22.5 million euros per year.

New construction of the IEE at the main cultural station in Kassel

The IEE currently has various locations in and around Kassel. A new building is currently being built near Kassel's main train station, which will provide space for all employees of the institute. In the 4-storey building with a usable area of around 7,600 square meters, a large technical center and several specialist laboratories will be built in addition to offices and seminar rooms.
