Herman Frederick "Fred" Crane (born March 22, 1918 in New Orleans , † August 21, 2008 in Atlanta ) was an American actor and radio host.

Life

Fred Crane played college football and appeared in several theater productions in his hometown of New Orleans. At the age of 20 he went to Hollywood . There he quickly got his first role, with which he should become famous. While accompanying a friend to an audition, he was noticed because of his southern accent and good looks, and was hired. He played Brent Tarleton , an admirer of Scarlett O'Hara , in Gone With the Wind . Years later, in an interview, he described this role with the words: "I am just a small shard in a large mosaic". During the filming, he befriended George Reeves , who played his twin brother and became best man at his first wedding in 1940. The Second World War interrupted the career Cranes in show business.

After the war, Crane initially worked for television , but quickly switched to radio , where he was particularly successful at Jack Benny's side . Therefore, he only had a total of seven appearances in film and television. For 41 years he was program director of the radio station KFAC together with Carl Princi and moderated the morning program there. He was particularly known for his voice, which he could use to perform dramatic texts.

By its fifth and last wife he operated in Barnesville in Georgia temporarily a hotel in a former hospital of the Confederacy from the time of the Civil War . He also kept mementos of Gone with the Wind there. Crane died after complications from leg vein surgery in an Atlanta, Georgia hospital. He was the penultimate male actor from Gone With the Wind ; only child actor Mickey Kuhn survived Crane.
