Fred DeLuca
Frederick Adrian "Fred" DeLuca (born October 3, 1947 in Brooklyn , New York City , † September 14, 2015 in Lauderdale Lakes , Florida ) was an American entrepreneur . He is the founder of the Subway fast food chain .
According to the official company history, DeLuca was looking for a way to finance his medical studies at the age of 17 . Peter Buck, a friend of the family, is said to have advised him to open a sandwich shop. He should just rent a room, build a counter and buy some groceries . Buck would become his partner and give him $ 1,000 when Luca was ready to implement the idea. The first Subway restaurant opened on August 28, 1965 in Bridgeport , Connecticut, USA .
Today, in terms of the number of branches, Subway is the largest fast food chain in the world, but sales are far behind that of McDonald’s . DeLuca was ranked 242 on Forbes Magazine's 2006 list of the richest Americans with a fortune of $ 1.5 billion. He lived in Fort Lauderdale , Florida and was married. The marriage produced a son.
DeLuca died in Lauderdale Lakes in mid-September 2015 after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2013 .
