Fred Patrick

Fred Patrick (born July 25, 1965 in Paramaribo ; † June 7, 1989 at Zanderij ) was a Dutch - Surinamese football player who played in the Eredivisie for AZ'67 from Alkmaar and PEC Zwolle . He died in a plane crash in Suriname .

Patrick grew up in Amsterdam , where he played at the amateur club Neerlandia . There he was discovered from AZ'67; Together with Paul Nortan , Jerry de Jong and Sigi Lens , he formed the De Zwarte Brigade , the "black brigade" of players of Surinamese descent , in the Alkmaar youth team . While de Jong switched to Telstar in 1984 , the other three began their professional time at AZ'67. Patrick made his debut in the Ehrendivision on September 5, 1984. In the 1: 2 home defeat against FC Twente , the midfielder came on in the 66th minute for Peter Arntz . At AZ he was used 61 times in the next three seasons. His only goal for the Alkmaarer he scored on May 9, 1987 in an away game in Venlo to 1-0 lead in a 2-2 draw. For the 1988/89 season he moved to PEC Zwolle , where he scored two goals in 19 games in his first season. In the season 1988/89 he came on 20 missions. His only goal of the season he scored on the last match day, May 21, 1989, to lead 1-0 against BVV Den Bosch . PEC lost 2: 3 and got relegated to the Eerste Divisie .

After the end of the season, Patrick traveled to the Kleurrijk Elftal , a team of players of Surinamese descent who was to travel to a friendship tournament in Paramaribo . The visit of the Dutch professional players was intended to support the promotion of football in the republic that was formerly part of the Netherlands. On the night of June 7, 1989 the flight from Amsterdam to Suriname went. On approach for landing, the machine crashed two kilometers from the runway of Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport . Fred Patrick and 14 other crew members were among the 176 people killed.

In honor of the former player, the east stand in the new FC Zwolle stadium was named after Fred Patrick.
