Fred Saberhagen
Fred Thomas Saberhagen (born May 18, 1930 in Chicago , † June 29, 2007 in Albuquerque ) was an American science fiction and fantasy author. He is best known for his Berserker series.
Life
Saberhagen grew up in Chicago and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War . He then worked as an electronics technician for Motorola from 1958 to 1962 and from 1967 to 1973 for the Encyclopedia Britannica , in which he wrote the science fiction articles for the reference work. He then became a freelance writer and moved to Albuquerque in 1975, where he died of prostate cancer in 2007 .
He didn't start writing seriously until the early 1960s and published his first story Volume PAA-PYX in Galaxy magazine in 1961 . Fortress Ship , the first story of his later so famous Berserker cycle, appeared in 1963, a year later his first novel The Golden People .
He gained international attention with the Berserker saga, in which he describes mankind's clashes with an aggressive machine civilization, a forerunner of the Borg concept that later appeared in Star Trek . Saberhagen goes beyond the representation of military actions and war and also describes the inner workings of the characters and the devastation that the experience causes in their souls.
Other of his successful novel series were the Books of the Sword series and the Empire of the East series. In the Dracula novels, Bram Stoker's fictional character “experiences” new adventures with other literary characters such as Sherlock Holmes or Merlin . In these books, Saberhagen starts from the thesis that vampires are not evil per se, but, like humans, have the choice of which moral categories they want to obey. In the first novel of the series, The Confessions of Count Dracula ( The Dracula Tape , 1975), he tells the story of Bram Stoker's novel from the perspective of the count, for the action figures, Harker, Van Helsing, etc. only one group bumbling fools .
Together with screenwriter James V. Hart, Saberhagen also wrote the novel version of Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992).
