Frederick William Rose (born November 12, 1849 in London ; died January 3, 1915 there ) was a British cartoonist .

Life

Fred. W. Rose was the second son of the Scottish Hugh Munro St. Vincent Rose of Glastullich and Tarlogie (1800–1867), Army officer, Justice of the Peace , Deputy Lieutenant and landowner, and by Frances Walrond Roberts (1819–1908). He was distantly related to Hugh Rose, 1st Baron Strathnairn . Rose grew up in Paddington and the London suburb of Penge .

In 1867 Rose entered the service of the Inland Revenue's Legacy Office , based in Somerset House , as a simple clerk , where he remained his entire working life and rose to Assistant Principal . In 1871 he married the Scottish Catharine (Kate) Ross Gilchrist (1850-1932) in the Scottish community of Dornoch . They had three sons and lived in Kensington . Two of the sons died as British officers in World War I in 1914 .

The couple traveled extensively across Europe. Rose spoke French and German, and wrote a travel book about a trip to Spain , which he illustrated himself. The marriage ended in divorce in 1891, and Kate married Arthur George Witherby (1856–1937), cartoonist ("Wag") and partner in Vanity Fair magazine in 1894 .

In addition to his initially poorly paid public service, Rose wrote for magazines and painted. He was a member of the Conservative Party and active in the Primrose League . After his early retirement, he took on board positions in British cobalt mining companies in Canada .

Rose wrote two novels. For the Savage Club , of which he became a member after his divorce, he wrote the short story The Dayspring Sonata in 1897 . He painted maps on which he caricatured current political events. His Serio comic War Map with the representation of the tsarist empire in the form of an octopus became famous in 1877 . Rose was neither the inventor of this style of painting nor the first to place an octopus on a map. Rose's cards were reprinted in other countries.

Rose died in London on January 3, 1915, at the age of 65.
