Berthold attended the Stams ski school . At the Austrian school championships in 2005 and 2006, he won the silver medal in slalom and in combination. In 2006 he won the slalom at the Trofeo Topolino and the slalom as well as the Super-G of the Whistler Cup . In December of the same year, Berthold first took part in FIS races . In 2007 and 2008 he won three gold medals at the Austrian youth championships in the youth I age group (two in slalom and one in super-G). From 2009 to 2011, he achieved second place three times in the youth class II. Berthold won three silver medals at Junior World Championships: in 2010 in the downhill behind the Italian Mattia Casse and in 2011 in the Super-G and in the downhill both behind the Slovenian Boštjan Kline .
In February 2008 Frederic Berthold took part in a European Cup race for the first time . Since the 2009/10 season he has been a regular participant in this racing series. After finishing in the top 20 twice this winter, he achieved his first top 10 positions in the following 2010/11 season . On February 26, 2011, Berthold made his debut in the World Cup . In the super combination of Bansko , he got the first World Cup point as 30th. On February 9, 2012, Berthold celebrated his first victory in the European Cup in the Super Combined in Sarntal / Reinswald , after finishing second on the podium the day before in second of the downhill. In the 2011/12 World Cup, as in the pre-winter season, it was used only once, and again as 27th in the Kvitfjell Super-G, it won world cup points.
After three years in the B-squad, Berthold rose to the A-squad of the ÖSV in 2012. On January 13, 2017, he achieved his first podium finish with third place in the Lauberhorn Combined in Wengen, which was his best World Cup result to date.
