Frederic Chiu (born December 20, 1964 in Ithaca, New York ) is an American pianist .

Life

Chiu, who comes from a Chinese-American family, made his debut at the age of fourteen with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra .

He studied piano with Karen Shaw at Indiana University and also earned a degree in computer science . With further studies with Abbey Simon, he supplemented his pianistic training at the Juilliard School in New York City and also attended master classes with Misha Dichter, Walter Ponce and Alicia de Larrocha .

Chiu also took part in international competitions, for example in 1984 and 1985 in Maryland , in 1986 in the Bösendorfer competition in Brussels and in the Busoni competition in Bolzano .

After his concert diploma at the École Normale in Paris he became Marian Rybicki's assistant.

In 1991 Chiu signed an exclusive contract with Harmonia Mundi . In the same year he founded the Consonance chamber music festival with Philippe Graffin . After concerts in London and New York City in 1994/95, he lived in Paris and did not return to the United States until 2004 .

repertoire

Chius wide repertoire includes works from Johann Sebastian Bach to new music . The focus of his recordings is Sergei Prokofiev , whose entire piano works he has recorded. He has also performed works by Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt and Ferruccio Busoni .

The exact reproduction of the text, the rather static, not pushing forward game, the round, not very large tone and the clean trills reveal the influence of Godowski's student Abbey Simon.

Chiu shows a preference for programs that deviate from the usual concert routine and for sometimes extremely virtuoso transcriptions . He not only recorded Beethoven and Schubert transcriptions by Liszt, but also presented his own arrangement of Prokofiev's Leutnant Kije Suite op. 60 .
